 BETTIS HERLONG

Bettis Herlong graduated from Saluda High School after an outstanding football career.  He led his 1941 football team to the State Championship.  Selected to play in the Shrine Bowl and North-South All Star Games.  After one season at USC he entered the Navy. He entered Duke University on a football scholarship.  He returned to Saluda as Head Football Coach from 1948-1957 and completed his coaching career in Saluda from 1971-1978.  He led Saluda to 4 Conference Championships and 2 Upper State Championships in football.  He coached the Boys’ Basketball team to 3 Conference Championships.  He was the Head Coach of the Shrine Bowl. He was a member of the Saluda District One Board of Trustees and Saluda County Council.  He was inducted into the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame and the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  His career football record was 197-114-20.
